1922 Gibson F-4 Mandolin

$5,900.00

Gibson F-4 Mandolin – For the company’s first two decades, the F-4 was Gibson’s top of the line mandolin. Like most modern mandolins, it sported maple back and sides and a spruce top. They also have an oval sound hole (rather than two f holes) and a shorter scale when compared to the F-5 model.
Until 1921 they had no truss rod and the double flower pot inlay. (Gibson did away with the double flower pot to make room for the truss rod cover). The FON for this instrument puts it at early 1922, so it was manufactured right at the transition time for this change. Lloyd Loar, famous for creating the modern mandolin we all know and love today, finished his first F-5 master model in June, 1922, so this mandolin can be placed right at the beginning of what is thought of as the golden age of the mandolin.
This 1922 Gibson F-4 mandolin has all of the tone you’d expect from such an instrument while remaining structurally sound and cosmetically beautiful. It is currently set up with a Randy Wood two piece bridge for better playability, but the original one piece ebony bridge is included with purchase; as well as the original Lifton case.
